Department of Corrections is currently seeking highly qualified candidates to fill a
Paralegal 1 position, grade Q16 in the Populations Management/Records Unit.
About the Position: This is a dually allocated entry-level para-professional position that supports major legal work activities, communication and correspond with Courts and other public safety agencies, and a variety of specialized tasks related to the Department's clients' needs specific to the aspects of clients' Court case(s) and status(es). The incumbent is responsible for assisting with a variety of specialized tasks related to clients' needs. The incumbent must be able to accurately and meticulously perform thorough legal research, prepare timely legal documents for review, and approval while working professionally, effectively, and tactfully with internal and external customers who represent various socio-economic backgrounds. *This position is considered "Essential". The incumbent selected for this position must be willing to stay or report to work during a man-made crisis or inclement weather when other county employees have been granted administrative leave.
About the Agency: The Prince George's County Department of Corrections provides a safe, secure and humane environment for pre-trial and sentenced offenders. We also provide rehabilitative programs to inmates such as: education, juvenile services, religious services, domestic violence, barber styling school, nail technician, women's empowerment, substance abuse drug treatment, and community re-entry.
Examples of Work - Interprets official documents received from Courts and/or Judicial Officers of the Court.
- Reviews commitment documentation for consistency with policies and procedures.
- Researches inmate's name and alias(es), if applicable, to identify the defendant's prior intakes.
- Prepares inmate files. Completes requested information on jacket.
- Utilizes appropriate jacket based on identity alert variables established in file system.
- Reviews, interprets and/or enters information received from Local/Foreign law enforcement agencies.
- Accesses various databases, in the County's computer network to enter, retrieve, and interpret information.
- Maintains access/certification to the Maryland Interagency Law Enforcement System (MILES) and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC/RMS) network, to retrieve/interpret information reflecting charges within the State or Nationwide.
- Determines the type of inmate release(s) being ordered.
- Completes and assembles the appropriate forms to have releases executed by the "Release Team".
- Analyzes documents and enters the appropriate information into the PGCDOC's computer database, to reflect the type of release.
- Compiles necessary legal documents and records to be forwarded with inmates upon transfer to other jurisdictions/institutions.
Qualifications - Associate's Degree in Social Science or Paralegal studies from an accredited college or university
- Two (2) years of experience in performing paralegal/legal assistant work.

Conditions of Employment : Upon selection, the candidate must: - Be willing to obtain the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification.
- Be willing to work in a Correctional Facility.
- Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
- Be willing to work shift work days/evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Pass a drug test and submit to subsequent random drug testing.
- Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.
- Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties, if applicable.

New employees must enroll in the County's health benefit plans within thirty (30) days of the hire date. The effective date of the health benefits coverage is the
beginning of the month following a waiting period of forty-five (45) days from the date of hire. After enrolling in the County's benefit plans, employees may only make changes to the plans either during the open enrollment period, which occurs annually (usually each October), and/or during the year, due to a family status change (i.e., marriage, births, divorce and adoption).
