Summary : The Genetic Counselor is responsible for the delivery of genetic counseling for individuals with diagnoses of or at risk for conditions with hereditary components.
Job Description: KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES: - Interprets family and medical histories to assess probability of disease occurrence or recurrence. Provides education regarding genetic testing, inheritance, management, prevention, resources, and research. Counsels patients to promote informed choices and adaptation to the risk or condition.
- Interprets and discusses laboratory results with patients and their referring physicians to aid in the patient's plan of care.
- Educates lay groups, students, and health professionals in accordance with accreditation standards.
- Collaborates with multiple disciplines to provide patient care and achieve desired patient outcomes. Knows and understands the expertise of disciplines outside of genetic counseling, and encourages their involvement in the patient plan of care
- Maintains current knowledge of developments in the field of genetics through peer association, review of literature, and attendance at seminars and conferences.
QUALIFICATIONS: - Board eligibility or certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG)
- Experience as required for board eligibility
- Must achieve ABGC board certification within six months of hire
- Active Genetic Counseling licensure, or temporary licensure, as determined per State of WI statues
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: - Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of twenty-five (25) pounds without assistance
- May be exposed to blood borne pathogens (blood or bodily fluids) while performing job duties
WORK ENVIRONMENT: - Normally works in climate controlled office environment
- Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, and pharmacological agents.
- Use of computers throughout the work day
- Frequent use of keyboard with repetitive motion of hands, wrists, and fingers
About ThedaCare Genetics:
The ThedaCare Genetics department is a vibrant and growing team consisting of 3 Certified Genetic Counselors and 4 Genetic Counseling Assistants. The ThedaCare Genetics department is recruiting for a full-time Genetic Counselor to provide genetic counseling to patients both in oncology and general genetics (which may include adult neurology, adult cardiology, prenatal or other specialties). Potential to travel to multiple work locations.

Location: TCA Regional Cancer Center - Appleton,Wisconsin
