Job Description

The Trauma Educator works closely with the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager to coordinate and evaluate trauma education for nursing staff, including those newly assigned to care for trauma patients. This role plays a key part in supporting the trauma program and the organization's strategic initiatives, ensuring the hospital meets its accreditation and regulatory requirements. The position offers a competitive salary based on experience and is exempt.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Professional Practice

Collaborates with the Nursing Leadership and Executive Director of Education, Training, and Leadership Development to assess and enhance care delivery at the unit level.
Acts as a consultant to clinical nurses, optimizing care effectiveness to achieve the best patient outcomes.
Contributes to the development of nursing policies, procedures, guidelines, and order sets specific to trauma care.
Identifies ethical issues in nursing practice and supports staff and providers in resolving these issues, including engaging the Ethics Consultation Service when necessary.
Works with staff to identify and address the nursing care needs of patients and their families, incorporating knowledge of the disease process into clinical practice.
Organizes meetings with orientees, preceptors, and nurse managers to review orientation progress and provide constructive feedback.
Supports the Nurse Leader with learning and practice-related issues, including creating personalized learning management plans for staff.

2. Education

Conducts annual educational needs assessments for the department or area of responsibility.
Designs and delivers unit-based or service-specific educational programs based on the identified needs.
Coordinates in-service training sessions for new products, policies, and procedures across all shifts.
Organizes and ensures the completion of mandatory education sessions for staff.
Remains adaptable to newly identified educational needs and provides relevant, ongoing programming for staff development.
Offers continuing educational opportunities for staff within the unit, department, and organization.

3. Trauma Program Responsibilities

Works closely with the trauma program team, physicians, and administration to achieve hospital goals.
Stays updated on ACS Trauma Center Criteria and ensures compliance.
Collaborates with the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager to meet clinical and administrative criteria required for Level II Trauma Center verification by the American College of Surgeons (ACS).
Assists with preparations for and participates in ACS site visits.
Contributes to the operational processes of the trauma program, including preparing meeting minutes, reporting, and follow-up activities.
Supports the development and enhancement of the trauma program alongside the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager.
Assists with administrative tasks related to the trauma program as needed.
Contributes to the development of hospital and trauma-specific policies, procedures, guidelines, and order sets.

4. Technology

Demonstrates proficiency in using Electronic Health Records (EHR) and other relevant clinical business applications.
Utilizes a web-based incident reporting system as needed.
Manages payroll software effectively.
Expertly uses and teaches others on the proper use of biomedical equipment in the assigned clinical area.

5. Professional Development

Attends at least one professional development program annually to support personal growth.
Mentors staff in their professional development, including guidance on the Clinical Ladder, Specialty Certification, and other educational opportunities.
Maintains clinical competence in the trauma specialty.
Maintains required certifications and licensure.
Acquires new certifications as needed for the position.
Demonstrates leadership by actively participating in professional nursing organizations.

6. Collaboration

Meets with representatives from the service area to assess and plan educational opportunities for staff.
Participates in relevant committees as requested.
Maintains positive relationships with all disciplines and refers staff to appropriate resources.
Communicates effectively with clinical team members to ensure awareness of changes in patient care plans.
Regularly visits units to stay accessible to staff and address their needs, sharing information with Nurse Leaders and Executive Directors.
Works with leaders and clinical partners to establish both global and individual goals for the unit and staff members.

7. Performance Improvement

Coordinates and participates in system and performance improvement initiatives within the department.
Develops one performance or system improvement project that impacts professional nursing practice.
Monitors patient satisfaction scores within the department and works collaboratively with staff to improve them.

Minimum Education & Experience:

MSN preferred or enrollment in an accredited program approved by the Nursing Director.
3-5 years of experience in trauma nursing or a related clinical specialty (e.g., critical care or emergency department).
TNCC certification required.
TNCC Instructor/Director certification to be obtained within 12 months of hire.
Familiarity with TCAR courses is beneficial.
Experience with databases and Excel is required.
Experience in designing, implementing, and evaluating educational programs is preferred.
Prior teaching experience or instructor status is also preferred.
